Business

  • After her death, her business continued for another 66 years

  • Many African-Americans became successful just by working for the Walker company

  • She inspired people of her race

    • Upon her death, the black newspaper, New York Age, said "Her largest legacy is the inspiring example she has left to ambitious souls to undertake the achievement of large affairs" (Bundles 276).

  • She inspired the modern hair care industry and hygiene practices of thousands of women.

    • W.E.B Du Bois said "It is given to few persons to transform a people in a generation" (Bundles 276).


Community Contributions

  • Advancement of women's rights to be independent and not a form of property

  • Contributed to the YMCA

  • Paid the tuition for several African-American students to attend Tuskegee Institute

  • Active in anti-lynching movement of the NAACP, donating $5,000

  • Left ⅔ of her future profits to charity

  • She also left thousands of dollars to various people and schools
